We have moved to our new IB unit "How the World Works." We kicked it off with an awesome science lab allowing us to use our senses to describe objects by observable properties! We will continue to use our senses to investigate our world through rock observation and studies, nature walks, and other fun sensory activities

In math we have been decomposing numbers from 11 to 19 into a ten and ones by using objects or drawings, even pennies and dimes and understanding how it is written as an equation for example 18 = 10 + 8). To help us understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones we have been practicing decomposing karate where we chop the numbers breaking them into two parts. For example I would say: sensei, decompose 15! And the student will stand up and say "15 is HIYA 10+5!" In writing we are working on personal narratives and we discussed adding detail to our personal experiences. When writing about their winter break we were able to expand our writing by thinking about what we could add to better paint the picture in our readers minds. Who were you with? What did you do? What did you eat? We didn't just watch Ferdinand but we watched it with our Mimi and Papa in the afternoon while eating delicious popcorn and sour patch kids. We have been working on where we are in place and time by looking at maps and globes, talking about cardinal direction, and map keys. Next week we will make our own map with a map key! The students have been working towards earning their "I know my address" badge. Majority of the students have memorized it and earned this badge! Last thing: On Friday, January 26th, we will celebrate the 100th day of school. Students are encouraged to dress like they think they will look at 100 years old. Each child will also need to gather 100 items. They should affix the objects to a poster and label them as they are counted (by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s). The display should be brought to school on January 26th. |
