Don't forget to look at the post below that was from last week, but that you didn't get a reminder about because of the crazy snow day Friday (: We had fun! You might have seen some pictures on seesaw today from the Hanukkah stations. But here are some more! We learned about Hanukkah traditions such as lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, and eating latkes! Next week we will learn about and participate in Christmas traditions! Like decorating a tree with ornaments and making a gingerbread house just to name a few! Speaking of gingerbread, this week we have been COMPARING and CONTRASTING gingerbread people stories! We have read the gingerbread pirate, the gingerbread cowboy, the gingerbread girl, and gingerbread man loose in the school and discussed how they are SIMILAR and DIFFERENT. The class had many TEXT TO TEXT CONNECTIONS between the books! Ask your child which gingerbread story was there favorite!!
We tied our knowledge of 2D shapes into our learning about the winter holiday Kwanzaa! We observed the different shapes that appeared on the traditional African clothing that some people wear on Kwanzaa and made our own textiles using shapes! We discovered how 2D shapes can combine to create other shapes while making these collages. (student 1: "Look 2 triangles make a rhombus" student 2: "yeah and two trapezoids make a hexagon!") We also learned about Diwali the Festival of Lights (student: "Hey I thought Hanukkah was the festival of lights?!" me: "That's right that's what Hanukkah is called too! How are these two holidays similar?") As we continue learning about Hanukkah and Christmas we will continue to draw similarities and differences between them! I love how the study of holidays allows us to delve into rich conversation about family, tradition, and culture! It's fantastic! Talking about families led us to talk about word families (words that share the same ending). We created Diwali word family candles. Stay tuned for our syllable Hanukkah menorahs that we will make next week and our sight word holly Christmas wreaths!!! Speaking of Christmas, do you know a Christmas tradition in Greece is to decorate boats?! Well we do! Check out our Greece holiday display outside our classroom. And I may or may not have gone a little crazy on Amazon and bought supplies for the students to make their own boats with their reading buddies!!! (The students don't know that I've done this yet or that this is the plan!)
