In science lab, Mr. John taught us about the science of Fall. We learned about the anatomy of an apple, why leaves fall off the tree, and more! Here are some pictures of us making apple juice! Also Brian Monahan came to teach us about weather and climate. He taught us about natural disasters and changes in the weather. The students earned all their class eagle points and got to partner read with their stuffed friends today!

We have been busy in math! Knowing number names and the count sequence, counting to 100 by ones and tens, counting on (counting forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence), Writing numbers from 0 to 20, representing a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects), and counting to tell the number of objects Here is a picture of skip counting IN ACTION Ms. Howard the school guidance counselor came in this week and talked to us about being a good communicator. She was so impressed that we already knew all about being great communicators! She read Rainbow Fish and discussed with the students how the fish were communicators in the book. Then she helped the students make their own rainbow fish. Congratulations to Colleen who was chosen as this months Cookies for Character because she is an EXCELLENT communicator!
Even though it was a short week it was a good one! We talked about, wrote about, reflected on, and shared our experiences from the days school was cancelled for the storm. We not only shared our experiences with each other but posted our first seesaw post to the app sharing our experience with our parents. We also read the book Brave Irene and talked about the CONNECTIONS we had with the book.
We talked about text to text connections and that is when one book reminds us of another book. The class was excited to share that the book Strega Nona we read in the beginning of the year reminded them SO much of the Magic Porridge Pot book that the mystery reader read to us last week! "both characters didn't follow directions!!!" "Both pots overflowed with food" We talked about text to self connections, which is when a book reminds us of something that we experienced. The wind in Brave Irene reminded us of the strong storm winds that we experienced from Irma. In the book the wind was ripping branches of trees. "That happened in my backyard!" "My dad made me pick up all the sticks scattered everywhere from the storm!" This week readers worked individually and with partners, using all they know to read old favorite storybooks. The students are learning strategies to help them read their old favorites. They are learning to:
-Look at the pictures, remember, and read -Make the words and the pictures match -Talk like the characters -Use words to join the pages together (then, later, after, and...) -Read more and more exact words -Find, point to, and read some of the words In writers workshop we have been writing about a topic we know a lot about. We learned that sometimes writers close their eyes, picture the topic they want to write about, and then put all the details into the pictures and words. We also learned that writers write words by saying the word slooooowly and then writing down the sounds they hear. We are studying Greece for our international inquiry this year! (aka help Ms. Kurland plan her honeymoon haha!) We will be delving into Greek geography, landmarks, culture, and traditions. If anyone has any Greek connections please let me know. We were able to FaceTime with my friend Ms. Kelsey who is in Greece right now and she showed us around the beautiful Greek island Lefkada and answered our questions about Greek food, desserts, the people, and places. We can't wait to research and learn more throughout the year!! We will be so ready for International Day and will be so knowledgeable on all things Greece. She showed us the Greek sunset!!
