We tied in our Sharing the Planet IB unit, persuasive writing unit, England (country of study), and Dr. Seuss by listening to the Lorax and writing persuasive posters about how to stop pollution in the many Rivers in England. We also discussed that pollution does not just occur in England, it happens everywhere! Students noticed people have even been littering on the Heards Ferry playground! I love how this unit inspires students to take action and make change! Mrs. Brannon and I took their persuasive posters and made them into a Lorax display outside the classroom (:

We have really enjoyed learning about rocks, minerals, and soil and can't wait to start our new unit about sharing the planet! Mrs. Yancy taught us the central idea of this new unit "actions affect our environment." We will think, question, and observe environmental issues and take action to solve these problems. Our students will begin to research animals, learn about animal parents and their offspring as well as compare and contrast different animal species. Science Inquiry SKL2. Students will compare the similarities and differences in groups of organisms. a. Explain the similarities and differences in animals. (color, size, appearance, etc.) b. Explain the similarities and differences in plants. (color, size, appearance, etc.) c. Recognize the similarities and differences between a parent and a baby. d. Match pictures of animal parents and their offspring explaining your reasoning. (Example: dog/puppy; cat/kitten; cow/calf; duck/ducklings, etc.) e. Recognize that you are similar and different from other students. (senses, appearance) For our inquiry into writing, we will began working on persuasive and opinion pieces. We began this by discussing and writing about our favorite pets (: Writers are expected to give their opinions with sentence starters such as “I think”, “I feel”, “I believe”, “I can’t resist”, and “Everyone should.” Students also need to include reasons and examples of why they feel this way. We will identify problems in our classroom, our school, and our community and write to get the word out about these issues. Students will get the opportunity to create posters, signs, lists, songs, brochures etc. ELAGSEKW1: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are “writing” about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book For our inquiry into Reading we will continue our unit on learn about the world books (non-fiction books). We will be working on learning information from the pictures and the words and also wondering and asking questions as we read. Students will work with partners to practice re-telling their books like they are a teacher! We will also think about what is the same and what is different in the non-fiction books that we read. This week was week 1 of Measure Mania our measurement themed Toy Story Adventure! We measured Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead with non-standard units of measure! We practiced our measuring rules: line up the objects you are using to measure, make sure you line the measuring tools up straight, no gaps, no overlaps, and count how many units it takes to get from one end to the other. Next week we will do "There's a Snake in my Boot" measuring activity and "The Claaaaaaw"measuring activity!
MGSE1.MD.1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object. MGSE1.MD.2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. (Iteration) Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category. MGSEK.MD.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Represent and interpret data. MGSE1.MD.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another. MGSE1.NBT.1 Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. Next week we will begin Measure Mania, a Toy Story themed measuring extravaganza! We will begin with pinning the parts on Mr. Potato head and using our non-standard measurement skills! The students will measure the Potato heads using cubes and paper clips as non-standard units of measure remembering their measurement rules: (no gaps, no overlaps, the units of measure should be the same, etc.) The students will continue to practice this as well as recognizing the difference between height and length. We had an amazing Kindness Week and incorporated kindness into our writing and reading! We finalized Kindness Week celebrating the awesome friendships in our class on Valentines Day. Here are pictures of us decorating cookies! We also made love bugs and exchanged valentines (:
Kindness Week: HFE will be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge (GKC) the week of February 10th. The program is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The GKC is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. Please encourage your child/children to complete at least ten (10) acts of kindness on the checklist. No Place for Hate HFE is also in the process of becoming a No Place For Hate designated school. No Place For Hate is a self-directed program that helps schools improve and maintain school climate and combat bias/bullying, so that all students can thrive. As part of Kindness Week, the whole school will be signing a Resolution of Respect. To close out Kindness Week, the students will be treated to an in-house field trip on Thursday, February 13th featuring Mr. Greg’s Musical Madness Fantastic Band. The performance will focus on being kind and anti-bullying. KINDNESS MATTERS at HFE! Speaking of kindness, the students have been working on giving each other positive feedback and compliments on their work. The students have finished their How-to books and posted their work on seesaw (so check them out!) You can also see some of the amazing feedback peers are giving each other on seesaw. These kind kiddos got to share the love with their VIPS this week and it was a blast! It was so nice meeting some of the important special people in their lives
