Today the students presented their informational writing on an animal they chose from the forest habitat! They learned how to research using technology (mackinvia, kiddle, kid rex, sand diego zoo kids, national geographic kids) as well as reading nonfiction books about their animal from the library! They made their very own informational books using the knowledge that they gained. Their writing included the nonfiction features that we learned about (diagram, labels, table of contents, etc). The students went through the steps of the writing process. Research (prewriting), drafting, editing, and publishing. Here are some pictures of the students editing their work using an editing checklist. They reread their work to make sure they could read their writing, wrote a letter for each sound they heard, used the word wall to help them, put spaces between words, used lowercase letters, and capitalized the first word of every sentence. Perhaps the most memorable part of the writing process was being able to share and celebrate our work with some HFE staff members that we invited to our living wax museum!!! Look below for pictures and to see even more pictures click the ELA/reading/writing tab!
This morning we made and set leprechaun traps out of recyclable items but that sneaky leprechaun was too fast!
Speaking of recyclable items a note came home in the Thursday folder about our summative project for our "Sharing the Planet" IB unit. We need assistance in gathering materials for this project such as bottle caps, soda can tabs, toilet paper/paper towel rolls etc. Please start sending in items Wednesday March 28th. We will accept rinsed/cleaned items through March 30th. Also in your Thursday folder you may have received your digital learning day work that was turned in to me back with feedback from me. If you haven't received it and you turned it in, it will be in next Thursdays folder with comments (I'm still looking through them)! It looks like the students had a productive learning day! In this IB unit we have been learning about animals and habitats and the students have been working on informational books about an animal they chose in the forest habitat! They have been learning research skills (how to use books and technology to find and record facts) and have been compiling their research into amazing non-fiction books! They even made diagrams with labels and table of contents for these books based on the text features they saw in the books they were exposed to. You will be able to see these books as well as their entire writing portfolios (narrative and informational pieces from first and second semester) at the student led conference on April the 26th at 1:30. Have a great weekend! Math

Before I get into Dr. Seuss fun. I wanted to tell you all about Measurement Winter Olympics! It was a great success! Students were able to measure and compare lengths doing events like hockey shot and snowball toss. We also created a display outside our classroom comparing our heights! Next week we will be doing hands-on activities to experiment with capacity. Now here are some pictures of Dr. Seuss week Just a reminder that next week our field trip is on Thursaday March 8th. If you have indicated on the googledoc that your student is bringing lunch please pack it in a disposable bag with a disposable drink. Friday (the 9th) is no school for the students. It is not a conference day though, the teachers have professional development meetings that day. For Spring conferences I will be doing student led conferences! The students will be able to show you their work, their progress and their goals. You will be receiving an invitation for that a bit later. But do put it on your calendar if you can make it! It will be Thursday April 26th from 1:30-2:00.
