The pictures of the kids below show students participating in a couple letter sound activities and capital/lowercase practice activities that are on our literacy choiceboard (September=Pokémon theme). These are two of many stations that are options on our literacy choiceboard. During literacy stations students are working hard to achieve all their poke badges. At the end of September the students who have earned all their badges will get to eat lunch in the classroom with me! Lunch Bunch reward! Gotta Earn Them All!

We had such a blast in math today! We used our counting strategies to count toppings for pizza for our class pizzeria. At the pizzeria the students wore their chef hats and worked as a team just like in a real restaurant! They did it all! They were readers who read the ingredients and the amount needed that were on the order form, they were counters who used the "move and count" strategy to count the toppings, and they were checkers who reviewed and checked the amount before it was ready to be served to the hungry customer (me, with a strong Italian accent to fit the Italian pizzeria atmosphere). The class did awesome! Even our school chef, Chef Reggie was impressed!
One of our favorite parts of writing workshop is getting to share our work in the share chair. The person in the share chair gets to share their work out loud and receive compliments and praise from his/her peers.
Continuing on with our community helpers unit we have integrated community helpers into reading and math. In math groups we practiced our counting strategies while filling mini marshmallow cavities like a dentist and in reading stations we "baked" cookies to practice our color words like a chef
Today we got to visit Mr. John in the science lab and do some investigating and exploring in science stations! It was a lot of fun! Happy Friday! It was an excellent 2nd week of school!
What better way to learn how to spell the colors then songs, cheers, and play dough! For more pictures check out the ELA/reading/writing tab (:
We can count to count the number of objects! Today we worked on a cookie station on cookie pans matching the number to the quantity. Then in their math journals they made their own cookies practicing writing their numbers from 0-20 with a corresponding cookie with that number of chocolate chips. We will continue representing a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20. Look at the math tab for more pictures.
To begin our unit on counting we worked on counting to tell the number of objects by working in groups to build towers using the amount of blocks asked. It was great practice working in small groups. I was so proud that the students were on task and working collaboratively with each other. It was the start to many great learning stations in the near future! To see more pictures of the activity click the top menu and click the math tab. We also worked on spelling color words. Today we did three colors: green, red, and yellow. Ask your students to sing you any of the color songs to help them spell. For more pictures click the ELA/Reading/writing tab.
As we continued our lessons on rules and what is expected of us as Kindergartners at Heards Ferry, we read the book No, David! and then made David puppets and acted out scenarios of how we should and shouldn't behave in the hallway, classroom, bathroom, and during safety drills using our puppets.
Next week: In ELA, we are going to be working on colors and how to spell the different color names. We will also be working on our writing ELAGSEKW3: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened. In Math, we will begin our counting with friends unit MGSEK.CC.1. Count to 100 by ones and by tens. MGSEK.CC.2. Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1). MGSEK.CC.3. Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects). Count to tell the number of objects. MGSEK.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. MGSEK.CC.5 Count to answer ‘how many?” questions. In Social Studies, we will begin learning about Community helpers SSKCG1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of good citizenship. a. Explain how rules are made and why. b. Explain why rules should be followed. and starting our IB Unit Central Idea: Roles and Responsibilities in a community develop connections to others around the world. After reading Chrysanthemum, we found how many letters were in our names and compared the lengths of our names to our peers. We used the words "more than," "less than", "same," "most", and "least." The book also allowed us to discuss the impact of our words. We talked about using kind words that make our friends bloom instead of hurtful words that can wrinkle their hearts.
