It's almost April! In April we will continue to focus on addition and subtraction. The students will deepen their understanding of addition and subtraction by being able to solve and create addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract within 10. At home, continue to create real life situations in which students would need to add and subtract. For example, when cooking dinner, you could say, “This recipe calls for 3 cups of flour. I have already put in one cup. How many more cups do I need to complete the amount the recipe tells us?” In writing, we will begin working on persuasive and opinion pieces. Writers will give their opinions with sentence starters such as “I think”, “I feel”, “I believe”, “I can’t resist”, and “Everyone should.” Students will also include reasons and examples of why they feel this way. We will identify problems in our classroom, our school, and our community and write to get the word out about these issues. Students will get the opportunity to create posters, signs, lists, songs, brochures etc. We will wrap up our IB unit of “Sharing the Planet” and begin our final unit of “How we organize ourselves.” The central idea of this unit is that mindful choices lead to responsible citizens. Students will inquire about how choices impact others, seeking and considering others’ perspectives, and how to assume responsibility and take positive action. In this unit, we will focus on identifying and describing goods, services, needs, and wants, discussing why people cannot have everything they want, and how to use money to purchase goods and services. During math this week, we continued to discuss all the ways we can add two numbers together to make 10. For example: 0+10=10, 1+9=10, 2+8=10………8+2=10, 9+1=10, 10+0=10. We practiced using manipulatives to put two groups of numbers together and counted how many we had in all. We also began discussing vocabulary words that tell us when we will be adding two numbers together. What you can do at home: Practice all the ways to make combinations of 10. When students master this they can work on combinations of 20. Ms. Deloney started her student teaching this week and started teaching the students addition strategies and will continue to teach the kids more next week as the students tackle word problems! Then we will move on to subtraction! We will continue our unit on non-fiction books. I will teach students that readers can respond to the text by reading the words then using the pictures to learn even more information. We will practice saying things like, “The words say_____. I also see ______ in the picture and it makes me think ______.
We will discuss that when readers read, they think, “How does this page fit with the title?” They also stop midway to think, “How do all these pages fit together so far?” After reading, they stop again to think, “What is the WHOLE book mostly about?” Readers do a lot of stopping and thinking all along the way to figure out what the book is mostly about. We will also learn that when readers find a topic they are interested in, they can read more than one book on that topic to learn as much new information as they can. During reading groups, we will be reading instructional level texts and using strategies to help us decode words. We will work on fluency and summarizing. Our unit on animals and their habitat lends itself nicely to our unit on non-fiction books as we have been researching about our animals! The students have been given opportunities to demonstrate the mastery of the content in many different ways! Students have written books about animals, made dioramas of animal habitats, made a wanted poster based on an animal, and so much more! Your child probably has been coming home with increased interest about animals that you would find in China (Pandas, Snow Leopards, Tigers, Elephants) and it's because they have been researching them! You would be blown away by these researchers. They have been using all different non-fiction books, sites, and apps to gather important information about the mammal of their choice and they are really becoming experts. The students have been finding interesting facts about their animal's habitat, diet, babies, and so much more! The students have been using sticky notes to flag key points that they wish to remember and recording the info they find. Next week they are going to work to put all this rich information they have learned and collected and create their own informational books in writing! This week we we talked about non-fiction text features and created a table of contents for our books so we will know how our books will be organized! We also talked about how important introductions are when creating a book because introductions can hook your reader and grab their attention, wanting them to read more! Also as you probably saw on seesaw, Super ADDler the addition hero came to save the day! Bringing numbers of things together to find the sum! Last but not least, THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH for my sweet Teacher Appreciation Week gifts!!!!! I am so grateful for all of you! Thank you for making me feel so appreciated!!!
That's right! Now that we have taken our measurement post assessment and finished our addition and subtraction pre-assessments we are going to FLY into addition with the help of the lady that puts the add in Adler. I may or may not have been working on my addition super hero cape all weekend for this!
Addition and subtraction is a fun and exciting unit! We will be focusing on addition for the next few weeks. We will discuss all the ways we can add two numbers together to make 10. For example: 0+10=10, 1+9=10, 2+8=10………8+2=10, 9+1=10, 10+0=10. We will practice using manipulatives to put two groups of numbers together and count how many we have in all. We will also begin discussing vocabulary words that tell us we will be adding two numbers together. What you can do at home: Practice all the ways to make combinations of 10. When students master this they can work on combinations of 20. Here are our addition and subtraction standards: MGSEK.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1 , sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. MGSEK.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. MGSEK.OA.3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation. (drawings need not include an equation). MGSEK.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation. MGSEK.OA.5 Fluently add and subtract within 5. Also, this week in reading, I will be reading with students individually giving them their reading level assessment to see how much they have grown as readers! The students are pumped because this means they can go "book shopping" and switch out their books in their book boxes for more challenging and rigorous books! My superstars love to challenge themselves and LOVE to see their growth! They are also excited because like I told them we are going to delve into our animal unit by connecting it to what we have been learning about in reading. The students will get to explore non-fiction books about animals! Remember there is no school for the students Monday, so I will see them Tuesday! (: What better way to kickoff March than Dr. Seuss Read Across America Day?! In March we can expect:
Beginning our unit on addition and subtraction! The students will understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. What you can do at home: Create real life situations in which students would need to add and subtract. For example, when setting the table, you could say, “We need five plates. I have already set two out. How many more do I need?” A new IB unit! For our inquiry into Science we will study living and non-living and plants and animals. Our new IB unit will be “Sharing the Planet”. The central idea is that people have a responsibility to share and conserve resources in order to help all living things thrive. We will think, question, and observe environmental issues and take action to solve these problems. Our students will begin to research animals, learn about animal parents and their offspring as well as compare and contrast different animal species. Our “How-to” writing unit! Writers will practice brainstorming their ideas, practice telling their steps across fingers, and putting it onto paper with transition words. Students will focus on drawing diagrams, using labels, and continuing to add details. Students will also practice writing introduction pages to grab their reader’s attention. Non-fiction books! For our inquiry into Reading we will continue our unit on learn about the world books (non-fiction books). We will be working on learning information from the pictures and the words and also wondering and asking questions as we read. Students will work with partners to practice re-telling their books like they are a teacher! As we come to words that students aren’t familiar with, we will work on strategies that help us figure out the meaning of unknown words. |
