It's almost April! In April we will continue to focus on addition and subtraction. The students will deepen their understanding of addition and subtraction by being able to solve and create addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract within 10. At home, continue to create real life situations in which students would need to add and subtract. For example, when cooking dinner, you could say, “This recipe calls for 3 cups of flour. I have already put in one cup. How many more cups do I need to complete the amount the recipe tells us?” In writing, we will begin working on persuasive and opinion pieces. Writers will give their opinions with sentence starters such as “I think”, “I feel”, “I believe”, “I can’t resist”, and “Everyone should.” Students will also include reasons and examples of why they feel this way. We will identify problems in our classroom, our school, and our community and write to get the word out about these issues. Students will get the opportunity to create posters, signs, lists, songs, brochures etc. We will wrap up our IB unit of “Sharing the Planet” and begin our final unit of “How we organize ourselves.” The central idea of this unit is that mindful choices lead to responsible citizens. Students will inquire about how choices impact others, seeking and considering others’ perspectives, and how to assume responsibility and take positive action. In this unit, we will focus on identifying and describing goods, services, needs, and wants, discussing why people cannot have everything they want, and how to use money to purchase goods and services.
