We had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school on Tuesday! First we made fruit loop necklaces with 100 fruity loops! Then we had someone's Gigi came to talk to us because like the student said, "she's the closest person I know to being 100!" Gigi taught us about inventions she did not have when she grew up that we have today and what technology did look like when she was a little girl. The kids were fascinated to learn that the only telephone she had growing up was one hanging on the wall at a local drugstore and when it rang someone answered and had to run down the street to get the person they were calling for!! She also told us that the first time she went on an airplane she was 10 years old and people dressed fancy to fly on the plane! She said it was a very noisy experience because the propeller was so loud! Later our reading buddies came to help us celebrate!!! It was a surprise for both classes that Mrs. Child's and myself arranged (:
With their buddies the class made a 100 snack trail mix, had to make a structure with 100 blocks, and complete a 100 piece puzzle!

Celebrating Black History
We are excited to announce that HFE will be celebrating Black History during the month of February. It is an opportunity to honor the legacy of influential African Americans who shaped the course of history and made our country great. It also enables teachers and staff to enhance student knowledge regarding the many triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history. Students will learn about respect, equality and unity. Students will be inquiring about various people and displaying the research in the school lobby. Heards Ferry Live will feature important facts about famous African Americans on the daily news. The Media Center will have a special display of literature. Chef Reggie will be sure to have special soul food included in the lunch menu at various times throughout the month. Several Staff members will wear traditional African apparel to expose students to the culture. We invite students to join in! We are proud to announce that the Uruhu Dancers will perform for students on Feb. 20th. They are an Atlanta based organization with a goal to develop and educate the community through African culture, dance, music and song. We look forward to this wonderful experience. #peacelove&unityatHFE Here are some pictures of us working on our poster about Michael Jordan! In order to be prepared for any inclement weather day (snow day) that might happen this year, each school has prepared a Digital Learning Plan. Our teachers have created Digital Learning Day Plans for each grade level. Your child’s teacher will be sending that plan home to you on Thursday. It will also be posted on our website and on each teacher’s Weebly. In the event of a snow day, your child will complete the assignments. If we know in advance that we will be out for a day due to weather, we will add some additional items that directly relate to the standards that your child is currently going to be taught that week. The plan that you will be receiving on Thursday is more of an “emergency plan” in case inclement weather happens suddenly. Students will have up to five days to complete the work upon returning to school. Completing the digital learning day content will allow your children to not miss a day of learning (and not have to make it up either!). I suggest you keep the hard copy in a safe place or download the plan before we have bad weather- which could be at any time knowing Atlanta!
If you have any questions about the plan, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Thank you Lisa Nash, Principal
In math this week we worked on pennies and dimes. We learned that a penny equals one cent and a dime equals 10 cents. We worked on trading ten pennies for a dime in a game called duck duck make a dime. Students worked on counting out groups of pennies and finding how many groups of tens and ones are in that number. For example- If students counted out 14 pennies, they determined there is one group of ten and 4 ones. Next week I will be pre-assessing them on their knowledge of measurement because that will be our next unit and it's going to be fabulous! I have a lot of fun things lined up for students to explore height, length, size, weight, and capacity! As you can see, the students have grown tremendously since day one of school! They've grown taller, lost teeth, AND gained "super powers" to help them tackle books! The students learned that as they are getting bigger as people they are getting bigger as readers, tackling more challenging books! With bigger books come new challenges and the students have been learning strategies to help them make sense of the increasingly complex patterns in their books! This week the students have been determining patterns within text and using those patterns to help them read. To support the students with "pattern power" they played the game Guess What's Next with each other! You can ask them how to play and play with them at home when reading together! As a quick summary, how you play is one partner is the reader the other is the guesser. The reader reads just one page and the guesser tries to guess what the next page might say without reading it. The game is fun AND it supports students recognize patterns and predict what comes next. Readers can think, "What will be the same?" and "What will change?" The class recognized that sometimes the pattern of a book changes and books become more challenging because the author tricks you and sometime the pattern breaks (and it usually happens on the last page!) This week we even made our very own pattern book where the children were the stars! We also continued our 3rd IB unit. Transdisciplinary theme: Where we are in place and time Central Idea: Discoveries are made through exploration. Lines of Inquiry: * Patterns around the world (day/night chronological vocabulary ) (change) *Explorations of journeys and personal history. January Cookies for Character- I will be looking for students who demonstrate the learner profile of principled. The Learner Profile is: principled The Attitudes are: commitment and integrity We used maps to determine location and understanding our relation to it. We also learned about cardinal direction! Ask you child to tell you the cardinal directions listed on a maps compass rose!
