We loved getting a visit from our first mystery reader! She read us Elmer by David McKee a book about a bright-colored patchwork elephant! We then used colored squares to make a class graph of our favorite colors! Pink and green were our top two faves! Then the class colored an Elmer color by number sheet while enjoying their own colorful squares (starbursts!) It was so much fun!

In our reading unit we have been reading two kinds of books: learn about the world books and old favorite storybooks. We also learned that just like there are different types of books there are also different types of reading! We learned how to read privately by ourselves and partner read with a friend! To finish up learning about color words we pretended that we were community helpers around our community working with color words. We were doctors mending color word bones and bandaging colored injuries. We were vets helping out color word penguins in need of help. We were chefs baking color word cookies. And we were firefighters that put out color word fires. To check out pictures of our community helper color word stations click the reading tab.
We have been working on math stations and what they should look like in the classroom. Kids working on math, working together, taking turns, staying at the station, using the materials correctly, and cleaning up after! The students did an amazing job with this! Check it out! We also worked on spelling our color words this week! Ask your child to sing you some of the songs and chants they learned to help them! R-e-d spells red r-e-d spells red high ho the cherry o r-e-d spells red! G-R-E-E-N said a G-R-E-E-N that's green! B-R-O-W-N I have a brown beard on my chin! P-I-N-K hey heyyyy. B-L-U-E weee weee! We worked on spelling these words using play-dough and also played color word bingo!
Kindergarten is pretty SWEET. If we do say so ourselves. This has been a fantastic first week of kindergarten!! This week we focused on learning about our classroom and school rules. We also practiced a fire drill, lockdown drills, and a shelter drill. We did an awesome job staying silent and following instructions. :) We learned about our school’s positive behavior system and How to “S.O.A.R.”! We read No David! by David Shannon and decided which behaviors were "No David behaviors" and which were "Yes David behaviors" then we made our own David puppets and used them to act out expected behaviors in the hallway, classroom, cafeteria, and outside! The week seriously rocked! We even started working on building our reading stamina! And here is a secret, the students didn't even know they were building their reading stamina! They don't even know what stamina is quite yet! Without realizing it we were practicing staying focused on a book without getting too tired or giving up (:
