As a class we figured out things that we are experts at. They ranged from everything from sting rays to the monkey in the middle game! We made books all about what we felt we were an expert in. In one of our workshop minilessons we learned the importance of making sure all your pages go together. We talked about rereading your book and being able to say "yep, all of these pages are about _____." If your book is all about cooking and you have a page about soccer that wouldn't make a lot of sense to your readers. It was so wonderful seeing you all at curriculum night! I love our class and the community that has already been created in the classroom! Also, Tuesday students may bring in one stuffed animal for their SOAR class reward!

First off a couple important things for this coming week: Monday- college pride day Tuesday- school picture day Thursday- Curriculum Night We were able to make our learning cross-curricular by combining our knowledge of community helpers with our math lessons on counting! We pretended we were chefs in charge of following customer orders appropriately counting the right amount of toppings. We used our understanding of the relationships between numbers and quantities to count the toppings in the standard order onto the pizza. We put on Italian music and made those math pizzas like professional pizza chefs! We also connected counting to cardinality and representing a number of objects with a written numeral by being dentists (another community helper. The kids were alarmed at how sticky the marshmallow teeth were but thank goodness we were able to use dentist gloves (:
We are building reading stamina! The kids learned what the word stamina means. And just like marathon runners need to build up endurance to run a race we are building our endurance for reading. We practiced how to private read and how to partner read. We practiced singing, chanting, reading, and "play-doughing" our color words. Ask your kids if they remember some of the songs. "r-e-d spells red, r-e-d spells red..." We have been practicing counting to 100 and earning our "I can count to 100 badge" Today we learned what decade numbers are and how are voice goes high before we get to a decade number when counting like "twenty niiiiiiine, THIRTY" Some of us are still working on figuring out what decade number comes next. We will continue practicing and feel free to practice at home too! Speaking of practicing we are also practicing writing our numbers 1-20! Here is a picture of us practicing during math (:
It was such an amazing first week. We read The Night Before Kindergarten, The Kissing Hand, and Chrysanthemum and discussed and compared our first day feelings and I was excited to learn from the students that they felt “excited” and “curious” about kindergarten rather then scared, nervous, or sad! We went over class expectations and how to be a good friend.
