Hi Parents, I hope you had a great weekend! Here is what is going on this week:
Numbers- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFNmGsU2TqQ&t=29s -During math this week, we will continue to review key words and strategies for addition and subtraction as well as work more on word problems. We will review coins and their values and practice counting groups of coins using the strategy below. Here are our addition and subtraction standards: MGSEK.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings , sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. MGSEK.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. MGSEK.OA.3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation. (drawings need not include an equation). MGSEK.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation. MGSEK.OA.5 Fluently add and subtract within 5. The sorting, counting, and ordering groups standard is in this unit as well. What you can do at home: Have students sort silverware, coins, beads, etc. by color, shape or size. Students can then count how many are in each group and put the groups in order from least to greatest amount or greatest to least amount. Here is a fun website to practice this standard: http://www.abcya.com/counting_sorting_comparing.htm - During reading this week we will continue our new unit on becoming avid readers. Using nonfiction texts, we will practice talking about what we have learned in our books using fancy words. We will talk about how some of these fancy words are in bold or italics. The author puts those fancy words in bold or italics to let the reader know it is an important word. Students will use post-it notes to mark where they see fancy words in their books so they can go back to them when talking with their partner about their books. Students will also discuss what nonfiction topics interest them and find other students who have those same interests. Students will practice getting books together on their favorite topic. During reading groups, we will be reading instructional level texts and using strategies to help us decode words. We will work on fluency and summarizing. What you can do at home: Read every night like you are working with a partner (sit side by side, have a book in the middle, read back and forth, etc.) and ask your child questions about what she/he is reading about. For students who need to work on letters and letter sounds, you can have students find letters around the house and ask them what sounds they make. -This week in social studies we will continue to talk about goods and services and that we can’t have everything we want and need to make choices. We will bring in wants and needs to this unit as well. We will also talk about how not everyone’s needs and wants are the same. We will read “The Giving Tree” and make a connection between wants and needs. Students will also work on earning play money so they can spend it at kindergarten’s annual market day. Each kindergarten class will be making different goods and students can use their money to make choices and buy what they want/need. Here are the standards for this social studies unit: SSKE2 The student will explain that people earn income by exchanging their human resources (physical or mental work) for wages or salaries. SSKE3 The student will explain how money is used to purchase goods and services. a. Distinguish goods from services. b. Identify various forms of U.S. money (coins, currency). SSKE4 The student will explain that people must make choices because they cannot have everything they want. -We will continue our 6th IB unit: IB Unit 6 Transdisciplinary theme: How We Organize Ourselves Central Idea: Mindful choices can lead to responsible citizens. Lines of Inquiry: *Choices impact others(causation) *Seeking and considering other's perspectives(perspective) *Identify and assuming responsibility and taking positive action(responsibility) Key Concepts: Causation, Perspective, Responsibility Related Concepts: Impact, Empathy, citizenship Learner Profile: Principled, Balanced Attitudes: Independence, Confidence Transdisciplinary Skills: * Thinking: acquisition of knowledge, analysis, dialectical thought * Social: accepting responsibility, respecting others, adopting a variety of group roles * Communication: all * Self-Management: healthy lifestyle, informed choices, organization * Research: formulating questions, planning, organizing data What you can do at home: Have students practice saying the central idea, discuss the learner profiles and the attitudes of and how students can display these throughout the day. May Cookies for Character- I will be looking for students who demonstrate the learner profile of balanced. The Learner Profile is: balanced The Attitude is: commitment - In writer’s workshop students will continue our persuasive/opinion writing to make the world a better place. We have been thinking of problems we are seeing around us and will now be coming up with solutions to those problems. We will also begin writing letters to help make the world a better place and decide who we need to tailor the letter towards.
What you can do at home: have students practice sounding out words and writing down the sounds they hear on paper and draw pictures with details and label their pictures. You can also remind students that when writing, the first letter in a sentence is uppercase and the rest is lower case, there are finger spaces between words, and periods at the end of sentences. We will continue to work on this in class. Last week the students had fun putting their persuasive writing skills in action during our mock courtroom! Here our some pictures from that below!
